Ocean Wave

The Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction Group focuses on studies of ocean and sea ice processes and their interactions with the atmosphere. Specific research topics include,

  • Regional and coastal ocean modeling, data assimilation and prediction ('OurOcean')
  • Global high resolution ocean circulation models that include sea ice and Antarctic ice shelves ('ECCO-2')
  • Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center
  • Sea surface Temperature ('GHRSST')
  • Ocean mass redistribution
  • Coupled ocean and atmosphere processes
  • Instrumentation ot measure sea ice thickness

Researchers in this group analyze or assimilate into numerical models data from the Jason-1 and OSTM radar altimetry missions, infrared and microwave sea surface temperature sensors (AMSR-E, MODIS and others), ocean mass redistribution from the GRACE mission, and more.

In addition to the individual research interests of the principal investigators, this group is committed to contribute to ongoing JPL satellite missions and planning for future missions. The future direction of this group is to establish a team of interdisciplinary scientists with national and international reputations in studying interactions between the ocean and other Earth System components including the atmosphere, cryosphere and biosphere.

An end-to-end approach will be adopted including in situ and remote sensing technology, data analysis, numerical modeling, assimilative prediction and information management. An important new direction for this group is to develop the expertise and infrastructure required to transition basic science and research to practical operations, providing value-added information and products to policy/decision makers and decision support tools.
