James Margitan
Deputy Division Manager

Jim Margitan is the Deputy Manager of the Science Division, and is also the manager of the Earth Science Research and Analysis Program and the Atmospheric Chemistry Program in the Earth Science and Technology Directorate.

Jim's research focuses on in situ measurements of ozone aboard high altitude research balloons. These measurements, carried out from the tropics to polar regions, are used in studying the chemical and dynamical processes that affect stratospheric ozone and also for validation of satellite instruments. Jim also coordinates the ballooning activities for NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Program, in which a number of JPL and outside instruments fly aboard JPL's balloon gondolas for these studies.
