The essential next step in understanding the origin of the Universe is the detection of the gravitational radiation that is a relic of Inflation. This cosmic gravitational wave background (CGB) is likely best detected via its signature in the polarization of the CMB. Spider is an ambitious new balloon-borne experiment that combines all of the features necessary to make a definative search for the inflationary CGB.
