Research Interests
  • Physical models of lava flow emplacement on Mars and validation with field studies on Earth analogs.
  • The crystallinity, cooling, degassing, and rheology of lava flows on Earth and Mars.
  • Remote sensing detection, measurement, and monitoring of volcanic gas phase abundances and gas isotopic ratios on Earth, and the relationship to magma generation rates.
  • The dynamics of volcanic eruption clouds on Earth and analysis of where the different components go as a plume evolves (ash, sulfate aerosols, and different gas components).
  • Mineralogy and infrared spectroscopy of Mars surface analog materials such as palagonite.
  • Application of numerical methods to geochemical and petrologic studies (e.g. closed data set statistics, crystal size distributions, bulk chemical analyses).
  • Mars instrument development for mineral and petrologic studies (AEXS, XRD, XRF, and thin section analysis).
