SMILES (Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb Emission Sounder) Project Logo

The Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb Emission Sounder (SMILES) is a Japanese built instrument for remote sensing of the Earth¹s atmosphere. SMILES was launched in September 2009 and is mounted on the International Space Station (ISS). The particular focus of SMILES is studying the ozone layer and the chlorine and bromine ozone destruction cycles. In addition, SMILES measurements are being used to measure cloud water density and humidity in the upper troposphere.
